New Description - US 218 and its extensions in Johnson County described as follows:

Beginning at the Johnson-Washington County line at a point near the S ¼ Corner Section 33-T78N-R6W, Johnson County (N ¼ Corner Section 4-T77N-R6W, Washington County); thence north following substantially the center section line of Sections 33 and 28-T78N-R6W to a point near the N ¼ Corner Section 28-T78N-R6W; thence northeasterly, northerly and northwesterly through Sections 21, 16, 9, and 4-T78N-R6W and Sections 33, 28, and 29-T79N-R6W to the south corporation line of Iowa City, connecting with an unnamed street (approximately 590 feet west of the NE Corner Section 29-T79N-R6W).

Iowa City:

Beginning on an unnamed street at the south corporation line (approximately 590 feet west of the NE Corner Section 29-T79N-R6W); thence northwesterly on said unnamed street to the west corporation line (approximately 1000 feet south of the N ¼ Corner NW ¼ Section 29-T79N-R6W).

Beginning again on the west corporation line of Iowa City connecting with an unnamed street (approximately 1000 feet south of the N ¼ Corner NW ¼ Section 29-T79N-R6W); thence northwesterly through Section 29-T79N-R6W to the south corporation line of Iowa City, connecting with an unnamed street (approximately 430 feet east of the NW Corner Section 29-T79N-R6W).

Beginning on the south corporation line, connecting with an unnamed street (approximately 1360 feet north and 350 feet east of the SE Corner Section 35-T80N-R7W); thence northwesterly on said unnamed street to junction of Interstate 80, connecting with Interstate 380; thence northerly on Interstate 380 to the north corporation line/ south corporation line of North Liberty, connecting with Interstate 380 (approximately 2750 feet south of the N ¼ Corner NE ¼ of Section 22-T80N-R7W).

North Liberty:

Beginning on the south corporation line, connecting with Interstate 380 (approximately 2750 feet south of the N ¼ Corner NE ¼ of Section 22-T80N-R7W); thence northerly on Interstate 380 to the north corporation line (N ¼ Corner NE ¼ of Section 22-T80N-R7W).

Beginning again on the north corporation line of North Liberty, connecting with Interstate 380 (N ¼ Corner NE ¼ of Section 22-T80N-R7W); thence northerly direction following substantially the E ¼ section line of Sections 15, 10, and 3-T80N-R7W; thence continuing in a northwesterly direction through Sections 34, 27, 22, 15, 16, and 9-T81N-R7W; thence in a northerly direction through Section 4-T81N-R7W to the Johnson-Linn County line at a point near the N ¼ Corner Section 4-T81N-R7W, Johnson County (S ¼ Corner Section 33-T82N-R7W, Linn County).

PROPOSAL/ACTION RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended that the old description of US 218 and its extensions in Johnson County be deleted and the new description be included in the Primary Road System.

TITLE: US 218, Johnson County

DISCUSSION/BACKGROUND:

US 218 has been relocated from the Johnson‑Washington County Line north and northwesterly to a junction with Interstate 380; thence continuing north running duplicate with Interstate 380 to the Johnson‑Linn County Line. The first segment from the Johnson‑Washington County Line to the Hills Interchange was opened to traffic on November 12, 1982. The second segment from the Hills Interchange north to the Indian Hills Interchange was opened to traffic on October 14, 1983. The third segment from the Indian Hills Interchange northwesterly to a junction with Interstate 380 was opened to traffic on June 26, 1985. These relocations were functionally classified under the State Functional Classification System on November 25, 1986. The official description of US 218 should be revised to reflect these relocations. The old alignment of US 218 should be re-designated as unsigned Iowa 921 and 923 from the Johnson‑Washington County Line to a junction with US 6 in Iowa City. The old alignment of US 218 from a junction with US 6 in Coralville northerly to the Johnson‑Linn County line should be re-designated as Iowa 965.

US 218 begins at the Johnson‑Washington County line approximately three and one‑half (3 ½) miles southwest of Hills and travels northerly, northwesterly and northerly via Iowa City and Coralville to the Johnson-Linn County Line approximately one‑quarter (¼) mile west of Shueyville.

PROPOSAL/ACTION RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended to approve revising the description of US 218 in Johnson County and including the new description in the Primary Road System.

Due to a review of our Primary Road System records, US 218 in Johnson County should be deleted from the Primary Road System and the new description added should be officially included into the Primary Road System.

US 218 begins at the Johnson‑Washington County line approximately 3 miles south of Hills and travels in a northwesterly direction to the Johnson‑Linn County line approximately 1 ½ miles northeast of Swisher via the cities of Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty, Iowa.

PROPOSAL/ACTION RECOMMENDATION:

Locate US 218 and its extensions in Johnson County, Iowa as follows:

Beginning on the Johnson‑Washington County line at a point near the SE Corner Section 33‑T78N-R6W, Johnson County (NE Corner of Section 4‑T77N‑R6W, Washington County); thence in a northerly direction through the west part of Section 34‑T78N‑R6W and the east part of Sections 33, 28, and 21‑T78N‑R6W to a point approximately 700 feet north of the E ¼ Corner of Section 21‑T78N‑R6W; thence north following substantially the section line of Sections 22, 15, and 10‑T78N‑R6W to a point near the NE Corner of Section 9‑T78N‑R6W; thence in a northerly direction through Section 4‑T78N‑R6W, and Sections 34, 33, 28 and 21‑T79N‑R6W to the south corporation line of the City of Iowa City connecting with an unnamed street.

Iowa City:

Beginning at the south corporation line connecting with an unnamed street thence northeasterly, northerly and northwesterly to the west corporation line, connecting with an unnamed street on the east corporation line of the city of Coralville.

Beginning again on the west corporation line of the Town of Coralville, connecting with an unnamed street; thence in a northwesterly direction through Section 27-T80N‑R7W to a point approximately 0.1 mile north of the S ¼ Corner Section 36‑T80N‑R7W; thence northerly following substantially the quarter section line, crossing the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway, to a point approximately 500 feet south of the N ¼ Corner Section 12‑T80N‑R7W.
