Before starting:- This online process is for specialty and personalized plates only. If you need a regular county numbered plate, it must be ordered through your county treasurer's office.
- Veterans, military, EMS, firefighter, amateur radio, and persons with disabilities plates require certification and cannot be ordered online. To order these plates, select your plate on the view all plates page, complete the special plate application form, print, and mail the form with the appropriate documents and fees.
- You must have an Iowa driver's license or nondriver ID to complete the online process.
- If the special license plate you want is available and approved, it will be made and sent to your local county treasurer's office.
- It can take 6-8 weeks for your plate to be ready.
- You’ll get a notification from the county treasurer when your plate is delivered and ready for pickup.
- The plate will be assigned to your car when you pick it up.
- You have 90 days to pick up your plate. After that, it will be canceled, and no refund will be given.

Already have personalized plates, but need to switch to a new plate design?
If you currently have a personalized plate and would like to switch your personalized message from that plate to a new plate design, you will need to complete the special plate application form as we currently cannot complete this process online. You will be required to pay the initial fee for your new personalized plates.Check the status
