In an effort to design, build, and maintain long-lasting and cost-effective bridges in Iowa, the Office of Bridges and Structures is continuously seeking innovations in the form of high performance materials, new design methodology, and state of the art technology. In pursuit of the stated goals, the office has been successful in obtaining federal grants to fund these innovations.
The Bridge Engineer (BE) Program associated with the Institute for Transportation at Iowa State University (ISU) provides bridge engineering support and research expertise. This position is part of a contractual agreement between ISU and the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) and includes support of the Office of Bridges and Structures in the development and conduct of research, support of special projects and support in training. This unique relationship allows the BE to essentially function as an extension of the Iowa DOT.
