Section 2514. Curb Removal.

2514.01 DESCRIPTION.
This work involves the removal of curb from PCC pavements which are to remain in place. It also includes removal of flumes and construction and shaping of shoulders as specified in the contract documents.

The contract documents may also include granular surfacing of shoulders, seeding and fertilizing, and other additional work.

2514.02 REMOVAL OF CURB.
The Contractor shall remove all integral curb by methods which will not damage concrete that is to remain.

When the contract documents do not provide for resurfacing, the curb shall be removed by grinding with a machine designed for that purpose.

The curb shall be ground flush with the adjacent pavement surface within a tolerance of ± 1/4 inch (5 mm). The ground surface shall project inside the curb the minimum amount necessary to assure complete curb removal, but not more than 2 inches (50 mm). The resulting surface shall have a texture satisfactory to the Engineer.

When the contract documents provide for resurfacing, the curb shall be removed by grinding or other methods approved by the Engineer. These shall provide substantially complete removal of curb that extends above the pavement surface and a reasonably safe and smooth surface to accommodate traffic. These may include sawing and breaking, chipping, or use of detonating cord explosive. When removal is by sawing and breaking, the work shall be done as shown in the contract documents and as follows:

A vertical saw cut shall be made along the edge of the curb nearest the centerline of pavement. At the end of the curb section, the saw cut shall be extended to the extreme end of the curb, and at this point a saw cut shall be made at right angles and extended to the pavement edge. Where flumes occur in curb sections, the saw cut shall be extended across the throat of the flume. On resurfaced pavement, the saw cut shall be located 7 1/2 inches (190 mm) from the pavement edge, and it shall be to a depth of 3 inches (75 mm) below the surface of the resurfacing.

Immediately before breaking the curb, the sawed groove shall be cleaned and made free of dirt, stones, or any foreign matter to a depth at least 1 inch (25 mm) below the pavement surface.

Concrete, including resurfacing concrete and concrete across the throats of flumes, shall be removed to substantial compliance with the dimensions shown in the contract documents. Any reinforcement exposed and loosened shall be cut off.

When curb is removed by grinding, the ground material shall be removed from the pavement surface, and may be deposited as an edge fillet or spread on the adjacent shoulder surface.

Unless otherwise provided, broken concrete shall be removed in accordance with Article 1104.08.

2514.03 REMOVAL OF FLUMES.
Removal of flumes shall include removal of shoulder basins, slope drains, and discharge basins. The area excavated for flume removal shall be backfilled and compacted as directed by the Engineer. Flume material shall be removed in accordance with Article 1104.08.

2514.04 REMOVAL OF POSTS.
Posts shall be removed as directed by the Engineer. Holes resulting from post removal shall be filled and compacted as directed by the Engineer.

2514.05 SHOULDERS.
Shoulders shall be constructed as shown in the contract documents in accordance with Article 2213.12.

Depressions resulting from removal of flumes, slope drains, and discharge basins shall be filled with excess shoulder material, shaped, and compacted with a mechanical tamper or by other methods approved by the Engineer.

2514.06 TRAFFIC CONTROL.
Traffic control in accordance with Section 2528 will be required for this work. Work areas will be limited to approximately 1/2 mile (0.8 km) in length. Traffic shall not be allowed in the lane while a drop-off exists at the edge of the pavement in that lane. Work shall be scheduled so there are no lane closures or drop-offs at the edge of the pavement overnight. Removal of curb shall not be started on the second side of the pavement before the shoulder and fillet or granular surfacing edge treatment at that location is completed on the first side.
