RODENT GUARDS


 

GENERAL

Rodent guards are intended to keep mice, rats, and other small rodents from entering subdrain outlets, lighting towers, and other areas.  Approved sources are listed in the Materials Approved Products Listing Enterprise (MAPLE).

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR RODENT GUARDS ON SUBDRAIN OUTLETS

 

1.   Rodent guards shall meet the requirements of Standard Road Plan DR-304.

 

2.   All products of steel and iron shall meet the requirements of IM 107, Group 2, Buy America.

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR RODENT GUARDS ON LIGHTING TOWERS & OTHER APPLICATIONS

 

1.     The rodent guard grate shall be of the same material and the same opening size as described for subdrain outlets.

 

2.     The method of attachment will be detailed in the plans.

 

APPROVAL

Requests for product approval shall be made to the Office of Construction and Materials. A finished guard shall accompany the approval request. Approval will be based upon test results of the sample. Approved products are identified in the attached appendixes.

 

ACCEPTANCE

Rodent Guards will be accepted based on Approved Source with a certification statement.

Approved Sources of guards for double-walled polyethylene pipe are listed in Appendix A. Approved Source of guards for corrugated metal pipe are listed in Appendix B.

 

CERTIFICATION DOCUMENTS

 

The producer of certified rodent guards shall furnish, on each shipment day, a certified bill of materials or invoice which identifies the county, project number, contractor, and number of pieces. The certification of compliance shall be signed by a designated, responsible company representative and shall be stated as follows:

 

"The materials itemized in this shipment are certified to be in compliance with the applicable AASHTO and/or ASTM requirements and Iowa Department of Transportation Standard Plans and Specifications, IMs and meet the Buy America requirements as described in IM 107 for all steel, iron products and coatings."
