METHYL METHACRYLATE (MMA) , TWO COMPONENT TRAFFIC PAINT
GENERAL
Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) Two component traffic paints may be used as traffic paints in high traffic areas such as intersections (crosswalks, symbols), roundabouts, traffic circles, bike lanes, & bus lanes.
Note: MMA two component traffic paints give off large amounts of heat upon reaction. For some MMA formulations mixing of small volumes (less than 5 gallons) is recommended due to the exothermic reaction. Certain MMA coatings require specialized application equipment therefore never apply with standard painting equipment. Surfaces for application shall be clean, dry & free of loose material. MMA should be applied to unpainted substrates or to previous MMA coatings. MMA may not adhere properly to previously painted surfaces that utilized waterborne or thermoplastic markings therefore care should be taken to ensure complete removal of these previous paint markings are achieved. New Concrete pavements should be allowed to cure for a minimum of 30 days prior to painting. New HMA pavements should be allowed to cure per manufacturers recommendation prior to painting. MMA should not be applied to surfaces below 40 degrees F or above 100 degrees F or as recommended by the manufacturer. Friction anti-slip additives may be used with this product when enhanced traction is desired.
ACCEPTANCE
Acceptance of MMA, two component traffic paint for use on the Department of Transportation projects will be on the basis of manufacturer and brand name approval. Approved manufacturers and brands of MMA two component traffic paints are listed in the Materials Approved Products Listing Enterprise (MAPLE).

Approval of MMA two component traffic paints will be based on manufacturer providing information / test data to prove the product meets the above requirements. The manufacturer shall also include the following information: NTPEP Test Data (field and lab), Product Data Sheet, MSDS sheets, Technical Brochures and recommendations for product usage. Products should be submitted to NTPEP prior to submission.
The sand used to maintain friction shall be a commercial quality dry 8/20 blast sand or other recommended by the MMA manufacturer.
Glass Beads / reflective elements usage and application shall be as recommended by the manufacturer. Minimum retro-reflectance requirements are listed above.
CERTIFICATION
Products on the approved list in MAPLE will remain unless formulations change. Manufacturers are responsible for notification to the department if any of their products change formulations.
MONITOR SAMPLING & TESTING
The Construction and Materials Bureau may require manufacturer quality control testing to verify compliance with specifications. In the case of compromised or suspected non-complying material the department may direct that the product be sampled and submitted to an independent lab for evaluation. If the submission fails to meet manufacturers published physical properties it may be rejected – in addition removal from MAPLE may occur.
Do not use paint that is beyond its expiration date without written consent from the paint manufacturer. Submit written consent to the engineer prior to incorporation.
