Section 2510. Removal of Pavement.
2510.01 DESCRIPTION.
This work involves removal of PCC pavement including reinforcing, pavement widening,
HMA pavement, detour pavement, and integral and separate curb. This work also involves
breaking and leaving in place PCC pavement and, removal of anchor lugs in continuously
reinforced PCC pavement.
2510.02 REMOVAL OF PAVEMENT.
Pavement shall be removed as specified in the contract documents. Removal shall include
utility accesses, intakes, service boxes, integral and separate curb, and junction boxes
within the pavement area.
If the pavement is to be processed for reuse or stockpiled for salvage or recycling, it shall be removed in a manner that minimizes inclusion of fine material from the shoulder, subgrade, or other underlying course or other foreign material.
When a portion of concrete pavement is to be removed and the remaining portion is later abutted at its top surface with new pavement, the breakout line of the old slab shall be sawed to full depth. All concrete broken or damaged beyond the breakout line designated by the Engineer shall be removed to a new saw line and replaced by the Contractor at no additional cost to the Contracting Authority.
When removal of pavement is the cause of road closure to public or local traffic, the removal operation shall not be started more than 2 weeks before the succeeding operation is scheduled to begin. The 2 week requirement shall apply to each succeeding operation until the closure is no longer necessary.
All concrete, reinforcing, or other metal items which are removed and not specified for stockpiling, salvaging, recycling, or any other placement shall become the property of the Contractor and shall be removed in accordance with Article 1104.08.
A. Portland Cement Concrete.
If PCC pavement or other broken concrete is to be placed in fills, all protruding steel shall be cut off to within 3 inches (75 mm) of encasing concrete. It shall be placed in alternating layers of broken concrete and soil with a maximum depth of either layer of 2 feet (0.6 m). Broken concrete shall not be placed within 2 feet (0.6 m) of final cross section. The maximum size of broken concrete shall be approximately 0.25 square yard (0.2 m2).If PCC pavement or broken concrete is used as revetment, it shall meet the requirements of Article 4130.01.
When removal of pavement is adjacent to a bridge, railroad crossing, or similar structure, heavy breaking equipment shall not be used within the reinforced section at the bridge approach or 20 feet (6 m), whichever is larger or applicable. Article 1105.12, H, shall also apply to use of this type of equipment.
The pavement shall be cut full depth approximately 2 feet (0.6 m) from e bridge. Pavement breaking and removal within that area shall be by jack hammer or other hand methods. Beyond 2 feet (0.6 m) and within the bridge approach or 20 feet (6 m), a tractor mounted jack hammer or similar light equipment may also be used.
B. Hot Mix Asphalt.
Removal of asphalt pavement shall be as specified in the contract documents.C. PCC Pavement with HMA Resurfacing (Composite Pavement Section).
The contract documents may specify that the HMA Resurfacing be removed from the PCC pavement as a separate operation. When not specified, the Contractor may remove the composite pavement as a single operation.D. Removal and Crushing of Pavement.
The contract documents may require the pavement be removed and crushed. When required, the contract documents will specify the size and/or gradation the pavement shall be crushed to, and specify where the crushed material is to be stockpiled or used in the contract.E. Removal of Intakes and Utility Accesses.
The top and sides of the structure shall be removed a minimum of 10 feet (3 meters) below the subgrade or 6 feet (1.8 meters) below the finished grade in other areas. All the pipes in the structure to be removed shall be plugged using Class C concrete. If the structure is more than 10 feet (3 meters) deep, the remaining structure shall be filled using flowable mortar. Place compacted fill over excavation.
2510.03 BREAKING UP OLD PAVEMENT.
When specified in the contract documents, concrete pavement shall be shattered and
left in place. The maximum size of unbroken concrete shall be 0.5 square yard
(0.4 m2).
2510.04 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT.
A. Removal of Pavement.
The quantity of Removal of Pavement will be measured in square yards (square meters). This quantity will include areas of utility accesses and intakes within the pavement area; and integral and separate curb. Removal of reinforcing steel will be incidental to removal of pavement and will not be measured for payment.B. Breaking Up Pavement.
For the area of pavement broken up and left in place in accordance with the contract documents, the area shown in the contract documents, in square yards (square meters), will be considered the area of breaking up pavement.C. Removal of Anchor Lugs.
The Engineer will count the number of anchor lugs removed in each traffic lane.D. Pavement Scarification.
The quantity of pavement in square yards (square meters) where the HMA Resurfacing has been scarified prior to the removal of the pavement will be considered the area of pavement scarification. HMA Resurfacing removed and crushed with the PCC pavement will be included in the area of pavement scarification if the composite crushed material meets the gradation and composition required by the contract documents.E. Removal and Crushing of Pavement.
The quantity removed and crushed, of pavement in square yards (square meters) in accordance with the contract documents will be considered the area of removal and crushing of pavement.F. Removal of Intakes and Utility Accesses.
The Engineer will count the number of intakes and utility accesses removed.
2510.05 BASIS OF PAYMENT.
For removal of pavement and breaking up pavement, as specified, the Contractor will be
paid the contract unit price. This payment shall be full compensation for furnishing all
tools, equipment, labor, and materials for completion of the work as specified in the
contract documents.
A. Removal of Pavement.
For the area of pavement removed measured in square yards (square meters), the Contractor will be paid at the contract unit price for Removal of Pavement. When recycling is not mandatory, the cost of recycling pavement removal into granular subbase, granular shoulders, or special backfill shall be included into the cost of the items for which the recycled pavement material will be used.
The cost of saw cut and integral and separate curb shall be included in the contract unit price for the Removal of Pavement, Pavement Scarification, or Removal and Crushing of Pavement.
B. Breaking up Pavement.
For the area of pavement broken up and left in place in accordance with the contract documents, the area shown in the contract documents, in square yards (square meters), will be paid for at the contract unit price per square yard (square meter).C. Removal of Anchor Lugs.
For the number of anchor lugs removed, the Contractor will be paid the contract unit price. If removal of anchor lugs is not a bid item in the contract documents, the Contractor will be paid $400 per lane for each anchor lug removed.D. Pavement Scarification.
The quantity of pavement where the HMA Resurfacing has been scarified, in square yards (square meters), will be paid for at the contract unit price.E. Removal and Crushing of Pavement.
The quantity of pavement removed and crushed, in square yards (square meters), in accordance with the contract documents will be paid for at the contract unit price.F. Removal of Intakes and Utility Accesses.
