Arrow boards utilized on the interstate system and all primary highway roadways must meet the requirements found in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD - 2009) Part 6F.61 and Iowa DOT Specification Article 4188.10 & 4188.11. Arrow boards utilized on non-interstate or non-primary highway roadways and routes must meet the requirements found in the MUTCD Part 6F.61 and specification 4188.10 A B C D. Approved Products for interstate arrow boards and primary Highway roadways are listed in the Materials Approved Products Listing Enterprise (MAPLE). Arrow boards for non-interstate and non-primary highway roadways usage will not be included within MAPLE (Arrow Boards Not meeting specification 4188.11 requirements are not listed in MAPLE).
Approval Request Submittal Form
When an Arrow Board vendor is requesting the Department to evaluate its ability to meet 4188.11, the vendor shall submit a device for testing and complete the form Connected Temporary Traffic Control Device Approval Request Form found here: https://iowadot.gov/workzonereferencelibrary/docs/Smart-Arrow-BoardForm.pdf
Completed Forms shall be submitted to the Construction and Materials Bureau. Email submittal of the form is allowed. Please submit to brian.worrel@iowadot.us and scott.sommers@iowadot.us.
Communications Protocol
Manufacturers and suppliers are allowed to select either of these protocols for the systems provided on Iowa DOT projects.
Option 1 Smart Arrow Board Protocol JSON, which receives data from an intermediary server.
Option 2 Smart Arrow Board Protocol where data is polled directly from the arrow board.
Appendix B describes in detail the communications protocol for each option.
Approved Products
There will be no qualified products list (QPL) when the requirements of 4188.11 do not apply.
Arrow boards listed within (MAPLE), Appendix A, have met the requirements of 4188.10 & 4188.11.
