MODULAR EXPANSION JOINT ASSEMBLY

GENERAL

The requirements for the Modular Expansion Joint Assembly (MEJA) shall consist of furnishing materials and incidentals necessary to design, fabricate, test, certify, and install the modular expansion joint assembly as specified in the Contract documents.  Additionally, this work will consist of the design, detailing, and submittal of calculations and shop drawings for the design of reinforcing steel required in the modular joint blockout in bridge abutment backwalls and bridge slab. The design and detail of the reinforcing steel shall meet or exceed the minimum requirement provided in the design plans.  The fabrication and installation of the galvanized barrier rail cover plates shall also be included herein.

Contractor shall submit details of the barrier rail conduit expansion fitting in conjunction with the modular joint barrier rail cover plate details for review and acceptance.  Fabrication of the MEJA and all miscellaneous components shall be fabricated by plants and shops that are approved prior to the letting.

All products of steel, iron, and coating employed in the fabrication of the MEJA shall be from domestic origin, melted, processed, and manufactured in the USA.

Approved fabricating shops are listed in this Appendix.

MATERIALS

Materials for the MEJA shall comply with the following requirements:

  1. Blockout concrete shall be in accordance with project plans and specifications.

  1. Reinforcing steel shall be epoxy coated, meeting the requirements of Article 4151 of the Standard Specifications and shall be from approved sources (refer to IM 451 Appendix D) and approved suppliers (refer to IM 451 Appendix B) and approved coaters (refer to IM 451.03B Appendix A).

  1. Pre-formed elastomeric joint seal and lubricant adhesive meeting the requirements of Article 4136 of the Standard Specifications and AASHTO M 220.

  1. Structural steel meeting the requirements of Article 4152 of the Standard Specifications.

  1. Galvanizing shall meet the requirements of ASTM A 123 or AASHTO M 111.

  1. Stainless Steel shall meet the requirements of ASTM A 240 / A 240 M, Type 304 with Class 2 B-Finish.

  1. Stainless steel mating surfaces shall meet the requirements of ASTM 240 / A 240 M, Type 304, minimum No. 8 mirror finish for mating surface.  Minimum 16 gauge thickness for stainless steel plate.

  1. Poly-tetra-fluor-ethylene (PTFE) shall be 100% virgin Teflon, woven PTFE fabric or dimpled PTFE and shall meet the requirements of AASHTO, Section 18.8, Division II.

  1. Bolts, nuts, and washers and any other hardware shall meet the requirements of ASTM A 325, A 563 DH and F 436 and shall be galvanized to the requirements of ASTM B 695, class 55, Type 1.

  1. Urethane Foam shall meet the requirements of ASTM D 3574.

  1. Springs, bearings, and equidistant devices shall have the same material composition and formulation, manufacturers, fabrication procedure, and configuration as those used in the pre-qualification tests.

FABRICATION REQUIREMENTS

  1. The facility shall be AISC Certified for category “Bridge Components” or higher. Approved fabricator shall have a quality control management system and experience utilizing fabrication practices in compliance with the contract requirements for the fabrication of MEJA.  A written documentation of the fabricator’s experience shall be provided for review and approval.

  1. Welding shall conform to the requirements of ANSI / AASHTO / AWS Bridge Welding Code D 1.5 welding shall be performed by a certified welder and weld procedure specification (WPS) shall be submitted for approval.

  1. Fabricator shall thoroughly clean and remove excess galvanizing material from interior portions of steel extrusions prior to installing elastomeric seals.

  1. Damage to the joint system during shipping , handling, or installation shall be cause for rejection of the system.

  1. Repair damage to the corrosion protection system in accordance with the IM requirements and to the satisfaction of the Engineer.

  1. Design the MEJA, fabricate and deliver to the job site as a continuous unit.  Field welding of the MEJA is not permitted.

  1. Single piece seals shall be provided.  Seals shall be shop installed, except when indicated otherwise.  No splices are permitted.

  1. Edge beams and center beams shall be machined or extruded to form the required profile.  Multiple pieces welded to form the profile or bent / crimped to form the required profile are not permitted. Non-load bearing gland retainers may be welded to the edge and center beams.

  1.

  1. Furnish a joint such that the bearings and slide assemblies are removable and replaceable.

  1. Provide uniform gaps for all joint seals. The allowable difference in gaps at either end of a joint seal is 1/2 inch maximum

  1. To reduce corrosion potential, electrically isolate the MEJA by not connecting the bridge deck reinforcement to the MEJA
