Segment 2: Downtown corridor
The Segment 2 study area is the downtown portion of I-29 in Sioux City. The project area begins approximately one-quarter mile south of the BNSF's railroad bridge over the Missouri River and ends west of the Hamilton Boulevard interchange. The project area encompasses the existing Floyd Boulevard, Pierce Street, Nebraska Street, U.S. 77/Wesley Parkway and Hamilton Boulevard interchanges, as well as several local street connections.
Construction in Segment 2 began spring 2012 with the reconstruction of the Wesley Parkway interchange, Tri View Boulevard and a retaining wall from the Floyd River to Bacon Creek. The city of Sioux City will also begin the relocation of utilities. Proposed improvements to Segment 2 are more extensive than the other segments and will include upgrading mainline I-29 from four lanes to six lanes, as well as upgrading several of the interchanges within the study area. The major work in Segment 2 is anticipated to span seven years.
