Private directional signs are intended to inform motorists of public and privately owned natural phenomena, historic, cultural, scientific, educational, and religious sites, and areas of natural scenic beauty or which are naturally suited for outdoor recreation. These signs are required to be located off the right-of-way, (i.e., on private property along interstate, freeway primary, and primary highways.

Private directional sign examples

Examples of private directional signs
  • Example 1: Private Directional Signs can be placed along interstates and primary highways with a permit.
  • Example 2: All Private Directional Signs must be rectangular in shape. Maximum: 150 square feet (with no side greater than 20 feet).
  • Example 3: Private Directional Signs must display the name of the attraction and directions to the attraction (including exit numbers, if applicable). The Iowa DOT reserves the right to require posting of months and hours of operation.
