DISTANCE SIGNS

DISTANCE SIGNS

Distance signs are intended to list cities located on or adjacent to the highway. The signs provide destination information by listing the next major city along the route as well as the distance to the next community along the route.

Distance signs are installed on the interstate, freeway and primary highway systems.

Distance sign examples

Examples of distance signs
  • Example 1: The mileage shown on distance signs is the distance to a point near the center of the community. A public building such as a post office, city hall or courthouse is used as a point of reference for the center of the community. The mileage is rounded to the nearest mile.
  • Example 2: Distance signs are typically installed at the corporate limit of incorporated communities, as you are leaving the community. The sign may be omitted if the proposed location is in close proximity to a primary road intersection.
  • Example 3: Distance signs are intended to list cities located on or adjacent to the highway.
