The Iowa DOT has identified five bicycle trails of statewide significance. This focused bicycle trail system will allow the Iowa DOT to invest its limited resources in a more effective manner. Completing these trail corridors will expand and improve the statewide network of safe and convenient routes for bicycle transportation.
The Lewis and Clark Multi-Use Trail is one of the five statewide significant bicycle trails identified by the Iowa DOT that could be completed in the next 20 years. This trail will extend from the South Dakota border at Sioux City to the Missouri border for a distance of approximately 150 miles.
The purpose of this plan is to study route alternatives and recommend a specific route for official designation as Iowa’s Lewis and Clark Multi-Use Trail. A steering committee will be established jointly by the Iowa DOT and the consultant. This committee will provide overall guidance and direction for the study.
