2018 Short Line Safety Seminar

Join us in Cedar Rapids on March 14 - 15, 2018, for the FREE biannual Short Line Safety Seminar.

The March 14 sessions and the afternoon sessions on March 15 will be at Kirkwood Continuing Education Training Center (map of facilities) at 101 50th Ave SW in Cedar Rapids.

Field exercises the morning of March 15 will be held at the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railroad (CRANDIC) at 2330 12th St. SW in Cedar Rapids.

Track – track safety standards

Motive Power & Equipment - Freight car and locomotive safety standards

HazMat – HazMat shipper presentation; High hazard flammable trains (HHFTs)

Signal & Train Control – Activation failures

Operating Practices – Subpart F; Out-to-foul; Pilot assignments

Thursday, March 15 - Field Exercises at CRANDIC Yard

8 - 11:30 a.m.

Field exercises

Participants may pick from the following field exercises.

Track – Portable track loading fixture; level board calibration

Motive Power & Equipment – Locomotive and car inspection; wheel defects; blue signal protection

HazMat – General service tank car (DOT 111); pressure tank car (DOT 112 or 105)

Signal & Train Control – General crossing maintenance; ENS signage requirements
