Patton's commitment to sculpture stems from his belief in the greatness of art and "how it touches the intellectual spirit which only humans possess. A predominant force in my work is to help people realize that their deepest thoughts need art. I feel that art is essential for understanding the basic concepts of what life is all about."
"Reading art is like reading a book: All art, including sculpture, has its chapters, paragraphs, sentences, words, concepts-a beginning and an end. These stories are told in music, dance, paint, the written word, steel and stone. Every artist is in the business of communication. Public art allows me to do the most important thing in my life: Give a story to people that they will carry with them the rest of their lives. I'm a storyteller."
