The efforts to protect the bald eagles' roosting site near the Iowa River and mussels in the river, as well as the efforts to preserve the river, brought attention from many organizations, including the Federal Highway Administration, which presented the Administrator's Environmental Quality Award to the Iowa Department of Transportation in September 2002.
The award citation noted that this bridge project provided an important example to show that professionals in transportation- and environment-related fields could work together to advance transportation opportunities in an environmentally sensitive way. 1
