VIDEO TRAINING SERIES
To address growing concerns for worker safety in highway construction, the
Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Iowa, Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT)
and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) came together to discuss common concerns and
needs. From these discussions was developed a cooperative initiative of industry
and government, the AGC/DOT Safety Task Force.
The task force realized the need to focus on the human factor in the safety
training of workers. To accomplish this, they developed a series of training videos that
present an honest, true- story, documentary look at the dangers of the work zone and the
safety considerations critical for all workers.
Twelve safety training videos, along with instructional guidelines for each
were developed and produced through the AGC/DOT Safety Task Force.

The cornerstone of the series is an introductory awareness video titled ONE
STEP FROM DEATH. This video provides a general awareness of the dangers associated with
highway work zones and emphasizes the importance of every worker in ensuring safety. It
has been recognized for its presentation of this content through several awards, ranging
from the 1996
Iowa Film Award in the category of Corporate Training (Internal)to
a Certificate for Creative Excellence from the 1996
U.S. International Film and Video
Festival
in the category of Safety: Employee Oriented.
In addition to ONE STEP FROM DEATH, there are 11 stand-alone videos featuring
the many dangers and safety considerations of specific types of highway work. Each
video is 10-13 minutes in length.
