Section 2401. Removal of Existing Structures.

2401.01 DESCRIPTION.
This item shall consist of removal from the project of all portions of an existing structure, except the portions that may be required or permitted to be left in place. Unless otherwise provided, all structures or parts of structures to be removed shall become the property of the Contractor.

2401.02 NOTIFICATION OF COMPLETE REMOVAL OF BRIDGES.
The Contractor shall notify the Iowa DNR by mail and the Engineer, with the "Notification off Demolition" form, not less than 10 business days prior to the start of bridge demolition. If the Contractor is unable to begin work on the intended start date, the Contractor shall notify the Iowa DNR and the Engineer of the new intended start date by sending a revised "Notification of Demolition" form. Notification of the inability to commence work on the intended start date shall be made no later than 1 business day prior to the original intended start date. Failure to notify the Iowa DNR and the Engineer of a change in start date 1 business day prior to the original intended start date, will result in the need for a new 10 business day notification to the Iowa DNR and the Engineer.

The Contracting Authority has inspected the existing bridge for asbestos. Unless otherwise indicated in the contract documents, no asbestos was found, or it has been removed prior to the letting. The Contractor may use this information to complete the "Notification of Demolition" form.

2401.03 REMOVAL OF SUPERSTRUCTURES.
Steel structures which may be re-erected in new locations shall be dismantled and removed in a manner that will avoid damage to any of the members. Members shall be separated at field connections. All members of trusses shall be clearly and neatly match marked with white paint before dismantling. All pins, nuts, loose plates, etc., shall be similarly marked to indicate their proper location in the structure. Pins, pin holes, and machined surfaces shall be cleaned and coated with waterproof National Lubricating Grease Institute, No. 3 multipurpose grease, or an approved equal. All loose parts shall be wired to adjacent members or packed in suitable containers.

Concrete superstructures which are to be completely removed may be removed by any means consistent with regulations regarding safety and protection of adjacent property. Operations which might endanger new work shall be completed before constructing the new structure.

2401.04 REMOVAL OF SUBSTRUCTURES.
Unless otherwise provided or ordered, substructures of existing structures shall be removed to the natural stream bottom, and those parts outside the stream shall be removed to 1 foot (0.3 m) below natural ground surface. Where these portions of existing structures lie wholly or in part within limits for a new structure, they shall be removed as necessary to accommodate construction of the proposed structure. Blasting or other operations necessary for removal of an existing structure or obstruction, which may damage new construction, shall be completed prior to placing new work.

2401.05 REMODELING OF STRUCTURES.
On remodeling projects, steel superstructure parts that are to be removed and reused shall be match marked, dismantled, and stored as designated in the contract documents. Dismantling and handling shall be done in such a way to not impair strength or usefulness of the material.

When contract documents require removal of existing concrete, it shall be carefully and accurately removed to lines indicated without damage to adjacent concrete, exposed reinforcing, or structural steel which the contract documents require to be incorporated into the remodeled structure. Where concrete floors are to be partially removed, match lines shall be sawed 3/4 inch (20 mm) deep. This depth may require adjustment to ensure that the existing reinforcing steel is not damaged.

Demolition by impact methods with wrecking ball, pile hammer, etc., or by explosives will be permitted only in the case of superstructures which are designated in the contract documents as unfit for re-erection. When bonding new and old work, Article 2403.14 shall apply. Explosives shall not be used for removing a part of a structure to which an addition is to be made, except in the case of massive sections and only with the written permission of the Engineer. When explosives have been used, the concrete for at least 6 inches (150 mm) beyond the point of visible damage shall be removed by methods that will not damage the concrete that is to remain.

2401.06 REMOVAL OF STEEL.
All structural steel members specified to remain the property of the Contracting Authority shall be stored in neat piles at locations specified in the contract documents or within the right-of-way in the vicinity of the work at points designated by the Engineer.

Members of structures which are to be re-erected shall be neatly stored on skids above the surface of the ground.

When the contract documents specify that the removed steel is to become the property of the Contractor, the contract documents will show an indication of total lead and total chromium in the existing paint system.

2401.07 REMOVAL OF CONCRETE AND MASONRY.
Unless otherwise provided, concrete and masonry removed from old structures will become property of the Contractor and shall be removed in accordance with Article 1104.08.

2401.08 OTHER STRUCTURES.
Pipe culverts and other small structures which are designated in the contract documents as suitable for salvage shall be removed by methods which will preserve their usefulness. These items shall be stored on the right-of-way nearby. If not so designated, these materials shall become property of the Contractor and shall be removed from the site.

2401.09 LUMBER.
If designated for salvage, old lumber shall be removed from all structures by methods which will preserve its usefulness. Nails, spikes, bolts, and other hardware shall be removed from lumber, and the lumber shall be piled in neat piles at locations designated by the Engineer.

If not designated for salvage, all lumber shall become the property of the Contractor and shall be removed in accordance with Article 1104.08.

2401.10 BACKFILLING.
Unless otherwise specified, when part or all of an old structure to be removed lies outside the limits of new construction, any excavation below finished grade line, for the purpose of removal of the old structure, shall be backfilled with suitable earth to the original level or to the finished grade line, whichever is the lower, in accordance with Article 2402.09.

2401.11 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT AND BASIS OF PAYMENT.
When the contract includes an item for Removal of Existing Structures, the Contractor will be paid the Lump Sum contract price. When provisions in the contract documents do not cover payment for removal of a structure, including encased culvert pipe, footings, or other unforeseen obstacles to be removed, payment for their removal shall include backfilling made necessary by their removal. This payment will be as provided in Article 1109.03, B.

The payment for removal of an existing structure shall be full compensation for furnishing all material, equipment, and labor and for performance of all work necessary for proper storage of salvaged material or for removal of the old structure from the project and for any backfilling made necessary by these operations.
