The Commercial Motor Vehicle Unit (CMVU), in cooperation with its partners and customers, strives to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities, and allow for the efficient and safe movement of agricultural products, machinery and supplies.

The Farmer Safety Initiative aids in this effort by conducting community outreach sessions, providing online and printed materials, offering brief online educational videos, and answering questions received from farmers and agricultural businesses.

Stay informed

Officers with the Commercial Motor Vehicle Unit (CMVu) are available to meet with local farmers in the counties or communities where they live to provide an overview of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and Iowa DOT rules applicable to farmers and special exemptions to which they may be eligible.

Continuing Education

Federal and state motor carrier safety rules and regulations are comprehensive and cover a number of driver, vehicle and company issues. One of the goals of this program is to provide as much information as possible, in ways that are easiest to understand and as convenient as possible to farmers. In addition to the community outreach sessions, farmers can visit the many offerings on this website to learn more about the regulations.
