Web-based Transportation Curriculum Coordination Council Courses

AASHTO Test Method T-308

This training explains how to perform all of the necessary set up procedures, complete the steps in the test method, make all necessary calculations, and complete the documentation required to determine the asphalt binder content of a given asphalt mixture by the ignition method (AASHTO Designation: T 308). Advanced Self Consolidating Concrete (SCC)

The course will cover the basic characteristics of SCC and the advantages of using SCC compared with conventional concrete. In addition, it will discuss SCC’s composition and proportioning as well as fresh and hardened properties. Finally, specific examples where SCC has been used and the details of SCC use in slipform paving will be reviewed.

Basic Construction Survey

This training has been prepared to provide guidance and instruction to those involved in construction surveying. The important surveying tasks involved in this work and the surveying procedures to be followed are also described in this training. This training is targeted for those who are new to the construction surveying experience or for anyone needing a refresher.

Basic Materials

This curriculum covers the three basic materials used in highway construction. They are aggregate, Portland cement concrete (PCC) and hot-mix asphalt. The focus of this course is for employees that are new to materials or are interested in learning more about construction materials.

Bridge Inspection Inspector's Safety

This course covers basic bridge inspection inspector's safety guidelines. This course includes the inspector's safety role, necessary construction site personal protective equipment, and potential safety hazards. This is a basic course and is intended for entry level technicians, but is a good refresher for all technicians.

CDL Courses

  • General Knowledge - This course is a basic course covering general knowledge information about Commercial Drivers Licenses. This course is may be helpful to individuals preparing for the CDL exam or just as a refresher for CDL license holders. Change Orders, Claims, and Dispute Resolutions

This course includes information on what constitutes a change in a transportation contract, different kinds of changes, authority behind change orders, and regulations that impact changes. It also includes information on claims, determining validity, dispute resolution, and the best way to avoid disputes. This course would be most appropriate for the intermediate to advanced technician, but would be good information for anyone associated with highway claims, change orders, or disputes on a project.

Chip Seals Best Practices

This course covers the best practices when using chip seals. Included is information on chip seals, how they came into use, and how they are used as a preventive maintenance treatment for pavement. The course also includes material use and selection, material compatibility, and the characteristics of chip seal design. There is information on equipment, construction practices, rolling operation, performance measurements, and distresses. This course focuses on anyone constructing or inspecting chip seal. The course focuses on the intermediate to advanced level employee.

Daily Diary (Documentation Training)

This course covers the information that would be included in inspection documentation and the proper way that information needs to be recorded. The focus for this course is for individuals recording information on a construction project, but also appropriate for anyone that documents any information.

Earth Materials as Engineering Materials

This training is an overview of the basic properties of earth materials or soil and their engineering properties as they relate to construction. The course discusses the types of soils, soil characteristics that effect engineering performance, and the process of soil verification. It also includes the inspector's responsibilities as part of the contract specifications. This earthwork course would be applicable for anyone working with or inspecting earth materials for a project, from the basic technician to the advanced worker.

Earthwork Series – Excavation

The Earthwork Series: Excavation course is designed to provide learners with information about the excavation process, the safety procedures necessary, and steps for addressing obstacles associated with excavation. The course will explain considerations and requirements for excavation and relate common issues and solutions associated with excavations.

The Earthwork Series: Fill Placement course is designed to provide learners with information about the process of fill placement, the safety procedures necessary for fill placement, and steps for addressing obstacles associated with fill placement.

Ethics in Transportation

This course shares with the participant ethical challenges they may face when working in the highway transportation industry. The course covers the ethical way to handle these challenges and the consequences if not dealt with properly. This course is appropriate for all employees.

Flagger Training

This is a basic course in the area of flagger training. This training does not go into individual state flagger training or certification requirements.

Global Positioning System (GPS)

This is an introductory course to the GPS. This course explains how the GPS works, but does not cover the use of individual GPS units. This course demonstrates the use of the GPS in construction. This is a basic course for anyone interested in gaining background knowledge of GPS.

Grades and Grading

Grades and Grading is part of the Earthwork Series. This course includes two modules that discuss the process of plan reading on grading projects, the purpose of grade stakes, global positioning system basics, and grade verification and documentation. This course would be applicable to anyone working on a grading project, from the inspector to the supervisor.

High Visibility Garments

This course covers the four different performance classes of visibility garments. It contains information on special labeling to meet ANSI standards, worn out garments, and the color and material of garments. This is a basic course and is intended for entry level technicians, but is a good refresher for all technicians.

HMA Cold-In-Place Recycling

This course will explain what Cold In-Place Recycling (CIR) is, and why it is used. It also covers what happens during pre-production and explains how the control strip helps determine compaction procedures and why it is needed. The course will identify the factors that can influence a CIR mix and describe important considerations during placement, compaction, and finishing. Lastly, the course explains the importance of curing and maintenance on the quality of a CIR surface and will also describe what happens once the surface is finished.

Integrated Materials and Construction Practices for Concrete Pavement Series

This series is from the Integrated Materials and Construction Practices for Concrete Pavement: A-State-of-the-Practice Manual developed by the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center. Each e module covers an area of this manual, which includes information on topics such as, mix design, durability, cracking, etc. The modules from this series could be beneficial to anyone involved in Portland cement concrete (PCC) construction. Some of the information focuses on the more specialized individuals.

This course reviews what a job hazard analysis is and why it should be performed, identifies the information that should be documented during a job hazard analysis, and provides example jobs and potential hazards that may be encountered.

The course covers common roadway safety hazards and how to recognize drainage problems. It also discusses solutions to common roadway safety issues and work zone safety.

Maintenance of Traffic for Supervisors

The Maintenance of Traffic for Supervisors Web-based training presents information about the placement of, field maintenance required for, and inspection of traffic control devices. In addition, drafting work zone traffic control plans and flagging are discussed. This training focuses on the design of a traffic control plan, and how and why one needs to operate and implement traffic control in the work zone.

PCC Construction

The Construction of PCC Pavements course is intended for at least three general audiences, including:
  • Contractors
  • Technicians
  • Inspectors
This course may also be useful for anyone else who is involved in daily pavement operations for the placement of PCC. Participants should have some working knowledge of concrete pavement construction. This course provides participants with an overview of the entire PCC paving process: setting forms, hauling, curing and grinding concrete, and joint sealing.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE’s)

This course covers the use of personal protective equipment. This course covers training or retraining in the proper use of PPE's. It includes the proper care, useful life, limitations, and timely disposal of PPE's. This is a basic course and is intended for entry level technicians, but is a good refresher for all technicians.

Pipe Inspection

This course covers pipe types, physical properties, location and disposal. It includes the foundation of concrete, metal, and plastic pipe and discusses pipe installation and quality. The course also covers placement of culverts, pipes, and other procedures associated with placement, as well as, pipe joints and backfill requirements. It includes project documentation, quality control, and acceptance testing.

Preventive Maintenance and Pavement Preservation

This Concrete Pavement Preservation Series presents current guidelines and recommendations for the design, construction, and selection of cost-effective concrete pavement preservation strategies. It concentrates primarily on strategies and methods that are applicable at the project level, and not at the network level, where pavement management activities function and address such issues as prioritizing and budgeting.

Recognizing Roadside Weeds

This is an introduction into recognizing roadside weeds. Not all of the weeds discussed may be native to Iowa. This course is not inclusive of all of Iowa's roadside weeds.

Roller Compacted Concrete

This course describes the characteristics of roller compacted concrete(RCC) pavement, how it works, and the benefits. Included are the potential limitations, pavement selection considerations and typical uses of RCC. Materials required to produce a quality RCC mix and typical material testing are also given. Mix proportioning, mix design, and well-graded aggregate in RCC, and calculating thickness requirements are covered. There is information in the course on proper ways to handle and store RCC materials, types of mixing plants, batching and monitoring and quality control. Subgrade and subbase preparation, pavers, joints, curing, and general construction of RCC are all part of the course. This course is intended for intermediate to advanced level employees. The course is for construction or agency technicians that will be working with roller compacted concrete.

Safe Use of Basic Carpentry Tools

This is a basic course in the safe use of carpentry tools. It has been designed for someone learning the basic steps in tool safety. However, it does not go into regulatory compliance or manufacturer's instructions.

Safe Use of Hand and Power Tools

This is a basic course covering the safe use of hand and power tools. This course focuses on the new operator, but is also a good review for the more experienced individual. This course may not cover all tools required for every job.

Safety Orientation

Prevention of injury and safeguarding health is the responsibility of both management and employees. The safety and health of employees is the overriding concern in all phases of operations. Completion of the first module will provide you with a general awareness of policy, responsibilities, what to wear, tools, hazards, and personal protective equipment (PPE). The second module will cover proper housekeeping practices, critical elements of hazard communication, confined spaces, procedure for lockout or tagout, and components of health and safety policies.

Site Preparation – Earthwork Series

This training is an overview of site preparation. It is designed to help the inspector to understand the responsibilities of preparing the site for the start of the construction process. It includes clearing and grubbing responsibilities, processes involved during utility relocation, and the inspector's responsibilities during site preparation. This earthwork course would be applicable for anyone working on or inspecting site preparation for a project, from the basic technician to the advanced worker.

Superpave for Construction

This course covers the benefits of using Superpave compared to previous mix design methodologies, testing procedures and calculations. The course also includes the use of phase diagrams to calculate volumetric properties and factors which can influence key mass-volume relationships and calculations. This course focuses on the contractor or agency's intermediate to advanced technician working on the construction of superpave.

Superpave Mix Design Process and Analysis

This course describes the procedures involved in the Superpave mix design, which includes selecting proper materials, mix compaction, and asphaltic mixture volumetric properties using phase diagrams.

TCCC Bolted Connections

The information presented is useful for non-structural applications as well. Bolting is a common method of making connections, care should be exercised both in their design, installation and maintenance. For the purposes of this course, we are focusing on the installation of bolts.

Testing Self Consolidated Concrete (SCC)

The course includes an overview of the fresh properties of SCC, including terminology, target guidelines, and quality control. In addition, ASTM test methods for slump flow and flow rate, passing ability using the j-ring, column segregation, static segregation, and making SCC test cylinders are reviewed.
