About Mitigation Design

Compensatory mitigation is required by the Federal Clean Water Act and Iowa Code when a protected natural resource, such as wetlands, streams, woodland, threatened or endangered species etc. are impacted by a DOT project. Compensatory mitigation measures are developed by a multidisciplinary team consisting of engineers, biologists, and a design technician.

A stream with severe channel degradation and stream bank erosion (Pre-Construction).

This man -made pond was used by several turtle species, including state threatened Blanding’s turtle, as winter habitat (Pre-construction).

The original man-made pond was filled to construct the new highway. A new pond was built nearby with a wildlife crossing under the new highway to access habitat on the north side of the new highway.

The new pond provides improved habitat for wildlife, including the turtles. The wildlife crossing maintains connectivity to habitat north of the new highway (Post-construction).

A site was being used as crop field. (Pre-construction).

Three tree planting areas with three different tree sizes (Design).

A site dominated mostly by undesirable species (Pre-construction).

A dike was constructed to create a wetland (Design).

Four years after construction, the site is filled with a variety of desirable species and is a functioning wetland. (Post-construction).
