Special Wastes

The Iowa DOT’s operations generate several types of waste that are not considered hazardous waste, but do require special handling. Most of these wastes are considered “Universal Waste” under EPA regulations. This designation reduces regulatory requirements with the intent to encourage proper handling and disposal or recycling. These wastes include light bulbs, oil-filled ballasts and capacitors, batteries (lead acid, lithium ion, nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, alkaline), spent oil filters, and oily absorbents. Also collected is the Iowa DOT’s electronic waste which includes computers, monitors, TVs, cell phones, copiers, printers, plotters, fax machines, etc. These waste streams are collected and stored at a dedicated waste management building. Staff in the regulated materials section conducts on-site management and arranges disposal of these wastes in accordance with state and federal regulations.
