Automated Vehicles Testing and Operating in the State of Iowa

AV Testing

Testing or operation of driverless-capable vehicles* equipped with an automated driving system on public roads are required to follow all federal laws, regulations and guidelines, and all regulations and policies set forth by the Iowa State Code/Rules and the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Review Iowa Code and Rules on Automated Driving Systems to ensure alignment on regulations, vehicle titling, licensing, insurance, accident reporting, etc.
* Driverless-capable vehicle as defined in Iowa Code section 321.514 means the vehicle meets the criteria for automation classification of Level 3, Level 4, or Level 5 as established in the April 30, 2021 edition of Taxonomy and Definitions for Terms Related to Driving Automated Systems for On-Road Motor Vehicles by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), available online.

Current Testing and Operations

The companies listed below have submitted to test or operate automated vehicles in the State of Iowa. 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has information about self-driving car tests across the country on their AV TEST Initiative webpage.

NHTSA has also made a rule that certain manufacturers and operators must report certain crashes involving self-driving systems or SAE Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems. You can find that information here.
