What is automated Transportation?

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials defines automated transportations as: All modes of transportation working together to improve safety, mobility, equity, and operations efficiency through interdependent vehicle and systems automation and information exchange. In defining automated transportation, it’s important to consider the cooperative nature necessary to support the safe deployment of automated driving systems or connected and automated vehicles by the private sector for use on public roadway systems

How is Iowa getting organized and prepared to support the safe deployment and integration of automated transportation?

The Iowa DOT leads and supports a variety of engagement, planning, research, policy, and pilot deployment activities related to cooperative and automated transportation within Iowa, regionally, and at the national level.

We are working to get organized and ready to support the development of connected and automated vehicle technologies by establishing partnerships and involving broad stakeholder involvement through our work with other state government agencies in and outside of Iowa, local government agencies, and federal government partners, including the Federal Highway Administration, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Also integral to these efforts are our universities, and a variety of private sector entities, such as original equipment manufacturers, as well as technology and service providers and nonprofit agencies.
