Hickman Road Interchange FAQ

Q. What type of interchange is being built?

  • A: This interchange will become a diverging diamond very similar to the First Street interchange in Ankeny. We’ll also be adding lanes to Hickman Road and adding lanes on I-35/80 from University to Douglas. Learn more about Diverging Diamond Interchanges.


Q: Why is it necessary to rebuild this interchange?

  • A: Traffic congestion is an issue in this area and data shows that traffic volume in this area is projected to increase nearly 35 percent by 2042. The updated interchange will improve traffic flow and increase safety.


Q: What are the traffic volumes in this area?

  • A: The last traffic count was done in 2022. Here are the average vehicles per day passing through these specific areas.
  • Hickman Road west of I-35 : 36,700
  • Hickman Road east of I-35 : 27,200
  • I-35/80 around Hickman Road : 99,500
  • Ramps at Hickman Road : 7,600-9,000


Q: When will construction be completed?

  • A: Construction will start in 2024 and is estimated for completion in 2028


Q: Will the Clive Greenbelt Trail be closed?

  • A: Yes. The trail will be closed when the contractor works on the bridge over the trail. There will be a detour for the trail.


Q: Will any roads be closed to traffic during the reconstruction of this interchange?

  • A: Yes. Hickman Road will be closed in 2027 to reconstruct the road as part of the new interchange. I-35/80, University Avenue, and Douglas Avenue will remain open at all times.
