Back to topAbout the Project
What: Replacement of the interchange at Interstates 80/35 and Hickman Road.
Why: Data shows that traffic volume in this area is projected to increase nearly 35 percent by 2042. The updated interchange will improve traffic flow and increase safety.
How: A diverging diamond configuration, similar to the interchange update in Ankeny at I-35 and 1st Street, will be constructed to increase safety. We’ll also be adding lanes to Hickman Road and adding lanes on I-35/80 from University to Douglas. Learn more about Diverging Diamond Interchanges.
When: All the design work has been completed and the project was awarded to United Contractors in July 2024. Construction began shortly after that. This is a multi-year project that is expected to be finished in 2028.
Project Budget: $94 million

The NB I-35/EB I-80 Hickman on ramp is nearing completion and is expected to be open in the next few weeks. An exact date is not known at this time. Please see map below for the detour routes.

Greenbelt Trail
Beginning October 1st, the Greenbelt Trail will be closed where it crosses under I-35/80. The bridge is being reconstructed and it is important to keep the work zone clear for everyone’s safety.
Two detours are in place during the closure:
- The first will take you south to University Avenue, then north on NW 114th Street to get back on the trail heading east.
- The other option goes north along the Timberline Park Trail to the Douglas Avenue Trail. Follow that trail east to 100th Street and then go south to get back on the trail.
