Des Moines Area Interstate Projects

Southwest Mixmaster Construction

About the Project

Interactive Map

  • WHAT : Reconstruction of the interchange will begin north of University Avenue and continue south to the Ashworth Road overpass south of the interchange. The project also includes work along the I-80/235 east-west corridor from 60th Street east to the Valley West Drive.

New flyover bridges will be constructed from southbound I-35/80 to eastbound I-235 and to westbound I-80. A new bridge for westbound I-235 will be constructed to allow for the realignment of I-235.

The project will also include addition of a lane on eastbound I-235 between 50th Street and Valley West Drive as well as improvements to the ramps at 50th and Valley West Drive.

The southbound University Avenue entrance ramp will only connect traffic to I-35. To improve safety, the ramp from University to I-80 and I-235 will be removed to reduce conflicts and improve safety.
  • WHY : The existing I-35/80/235 interchange was constructed in the 1960s. Traffic has significantly increased since then and the interchange needs to be reconfigured to improve the safety and reliability of traffic movement through the area.
  • HOW : By constructing flyover ramps, the new reconfiguration will address the short merge section between some of the loop ramps and will also alleviate some of the merging issues seen with the current configuration of ramps.
  • WHEN : Construction is expected to begin in late 2026 and be completed in stages through 2029.
  • PROJECT BUDGET : $114.5 million
