Linking Iowa’s Freight Transportation System (LIFTS) Program

The LIFTS program is a grant funding opportunity to improve Iowa’s freight transportation system. The LIFTS program grant funding is not limited to a particular mode of transportation, but is designed to assist projects that contribute to effective and efficient freight transportation. Project eligibility is far ranging. Awards are competitive for $2.6 million. A preapplication is required and due November 17, 2017. Applications are due March 2, 2018.

2017 Iowa State Rail Plan released

The 2017 Iowa State Rail Plan, intended to guide the Iowa Department of Transportation in its activities of promoting access to rail transportation, helping to improve the freight railroad transportation system, has been released.

The Iowa Transportation Commission approved more than $2.6 million in grant funding

The Iowa Transportation Commission on Feb. 9, 2016 approved more than $2.6 million in grant funding for six transportation infrastructure-related development projects under the Linking Iowa’s Freight Transportation System (LIFTS) program. The LIFTS program enhances economic development by providing funding to address freight transportation needs in Iowa. More information.

More than $4.5 million awarded through Iowa's Railroad Revolving Loan and Grant Program

The Iowa Transportation Commission on October 13, 2014 approved more than $4.5 million in funding for rail development and planning projects under the Railroad Revolving Loan and Grant (RRLG) Program anticipated to retain 57 jobs and create 16 new jobs.

Iowa Rail Toolkit

The Iowa Rail Toolkit was created to provide new freight rail users and economic development professionals with a basic introduction to rail freight shipping concepts, practices and access. Resources are included to help make shipping by rail in Iowa easier and more understandable. A directory of Iowa railroad companies is included listing contact information and a basic profile of each network.

A new study released today by the Iowa departments of transportation and homeland security and emergency management reveals insights into the transportation by rail of crude oil and biofuels around and through Iowa.
