2017 Iowa State Rail Plan released

The 2017 Iowa State Rail Plan, intended to guide the Iowa Department of Transportation in its activities of promoting access to rail transportation, helping to improve the freight railroad transportation system, has been released.


2018 Short Line Safety Seminar

The 2018 Short Line Safety Seminar is scheduled for March 14-15 in Cedar Rapids, IA. Though targeted at short line railroad employees, employees of rail-served industries are welcome to attend. The Iowa Transportation Commission on September 19, 2017 approved more than $2.6 million in funding for rail development and planning projects under the Railroad Revolving Loan and Grant (RRLG) Program The projects are expected to support the creation and retention of anticipated to retain 105 jobs and leverage millions in new capital investments across the state.

Iowa Rail Toolkit

The Iowa Rail Toolkit was created to provide new freight rail users and economic development professionals with a basic introduction to rail freight shipping concepts, practices and access. Resources are included to help make shipping by rail in Iowa easier and more understandable. A directory of Iowa railroad companies is included listing contact information and a basic profile of each network.

Iowa Crude Oil and Biofuels Rail Transportation Study released

A new study released today by the Iowa departments of transportation and homeland security and emergency management reveals insights into the transportation by rail of crude oil and biofuels around and through Iowa.
