  • There are currently 22 regional response teams that cover and provide services to 95 of the state’s 99 counties? The teams provide hazardous materials response capabilities and training to local fire departments in their service areas.

In July 2015, the Iowa DOT commissioned a study on how prepared Iowa is for crude oil and biofuels railroad incidents. The goal was to help state, local, and tribal governments understand the risks, prevention methods, and response capabilities for these incidents. The study assessed various areas to identify challenges and made recommendations to improve safety through policy changes, planning, training, communication, and other actions.

Ask Rail App Website

The AskRail app is a safety tool for first Responders. It launched in 2014 and is a collaborative effort among the emergency response community and all North American Class I railroads. Railroads work with first responders to continually update the app with new features and enhancements.

More than 99.99% of hazardous materials are loaded, shipped, transported, and unloaded safely. But it’s critical for emergency responders to train for the unexpected. TRANSCAER® conducts a variety of different emergency response training and exercise opportunities to communities and emergency responders.

Our free training is available in a classroom environment with hands-on activities led by an instructor. Classroom training takes place throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.
