The turnover rate of county engineers in Iowa has been approximately five to 10 per year, so a county board of supervisors goes through the hiring process fairly infrequently.

This document outlines the requirements and recommendations for filling a county engineer vacancy. A committee was appointed to document the process, which included an Iowa Department of Transportation engineer, several county engineers, a representative of the Iowa County Engineers Association Service Bureau, several county supervisors, and a human resources professional.
