The Iowa DOT maintains vast amounts of records, reports, and other information that are available for review to anyone who requests them. We are committed to providing records upon request in accordance with the requirements of Iowaβs open records law. Please note that some records may be considered confidential or may be redacted to eliminate exposure of personally identifiable information.
Cost
You will be provided up to three hours of staff time for retrieval and review of records and 10 pages in hard copy at no charge. Additional staff time to fulfill a records request will be charged at $33 an hour and ten cents per hard copy page. To reduce copy charges, every attempt will be made to fulfill requests electronically, if possible.
If charges are necessary to fulfill your request, you will be notified in writing of the costs and payment methods. Payment must be received by the Iowa DOT before records will be released.
Timing of Requests
You should receive a response to a records request within 10 business days. If the request could include confidential records or information, Iowa Code allows for up to 20 calendar days to determine what should be made available.
How to Request a Public Record
Due to the large volume of records available, please be very specific in the type of information you are looking for including but not limited to:
- date ranges
- search terms, and
- other pertinent information that will help us narrow our search.
You may access driver's license records or vehicle records without going through the open records request process.
