What am I required to wear for safety apparel?

According to the Iowa Department of Transportations (DOT) specifications, all contractor workers are required to wear ANSI 107-2004 Class 2 safety apparel any time they are on foot within the right of way (open or closed road). The background color of this apparel can be fluorescent yellow-green, fluorescent orange-red or fluorescent red at the contractor's discretion. The Iowa DOT specifications were changed to comply with the November 24, 2006 Worker Visibility Federal Highway Administration's rule making

Do flaggers have different requirements?

Yes, flaggers have different safety apparel requirements, which are stated in the Flagger's Handbook. During daytime hours, they are also required to wear ANSI 107-2004 Class 2 apparel AND a soft cap meeting ANSI 107-2004 headwear requirements (unless a hard hat is required by OSHA). During nighttime hours in addition to the daytime safety apparel, flaggers are also required to wear ANSI 107-2004 Class E pants. 

What about labels?

Any ANSI 107-2004 apparel is required to include a marking or have an affixed label stating the class of the apparel so that garment can be easily checked for compliance.

The American National Standards Institute.
