Ignition Interlock Device

What is an ignition interlock device?

Ignition interlock devices stop the car from starting if the alcohol level of the driver's breath is above the present limit. It's connected to the car's electrical system and has a set limit for alcohol in the breath. If it's too high, the car won't start.

Do I need one installed in my vehicle?

If it is your first OWI offense and you want a TRL, you will need an ignition interlock device installed on any vehicles you drive.

If you have had two or more OW I offenses, you will need an ignition interlock device installed on any vehicles you drive for 365 days after your driving privileges have been reinstated.

Where can I get one installed?

The following is a list of ignition interlock device service providers that have been approved by the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) for use in the State of Iowa:

Ignition Interlock Medical Waiver

Iowa law allows individuals with medical conditions verified by a licensed doctor to waive the ignition interlock device (IID) requirement for OWI offenses occurring on or after Jan. 1, 2025. Approved applicants can drive only with a Temporary Restricted License (TRL).

To apply, you'll need your physician's email address to complete the Medical Waiver electronically, or you can print and complete the form offline. Additionally, you must submit the TRL application.

Can I get a temporary restricted license (TRL)?

You are eligible for a TRL if:

  • You are over the age of 18.
  • If it is your first OWI offense, you have installed an ignition interlock device on all vehicles you will be driving. If you have had two or more OWI offenses, you will need an ignition interlock device installed on all vehicles you drive for at least 365 days from the date you receive the TRL or the duration of the TRL, whichever comes later.
  • Your OWI did NOT cause a death.

How do I get my driver's license back?

To reinstate your license or driving privileges after your revocation has ended, you will need to:

  • Pay a $200 civil penalty. Pay your civil penalty(ies) online
  • Complete an approved drinking driver course. The provider must submit proof of course completion to the DOT. Information on approved drinking driver courses can be found at the Iowa Department of Education OWI website.
  • Complete an approved substance use disorder evaluation and treatment or rehabilitation service. The provider must submit proof of completion to the DOT. Information on substance use disorder evaluation providers can be found at the Iowa Department of Education OWI website.
  • Present satisfactory proof of SR-22 insurance, or a residency statement if you live out of state. You must provide proof of SR-22 insurance for 2 years from the first day of your revocation. Failing to show or maintain future proof may suspend your driver's license and registrations. (Not needed if it is a "zero tolerance" revocation.)
  • Present satisfactory proof of ignition interlock device installation on all vehicles you drive, if applicable.
  • Make an appointment to get reinstated
  • Pass all required exams.
  • Pay a $20 reinstatement fee and the license fee.
