Sustainability & Resiliency
The DOT’s mission of making lives better through Transportation can only happen when the transportation system is resilient and sustainable.
When Sustainable . . .
The transportation system is available and in a good condition, meeting customer needs of today and the future. When transportation is sustainable, the economic, environmental, and societal factors are in harmony—one is not being sacrificed for another.
When Resilient . . .
The transportation system is constructed and maintained in such a way that we are able to anticipate, prepare for, and adapt to changing conditions and withstand, respond to and quickly recover from disruptions.

Statewide Flood Resiliency Analysis
A scoring system that helps Iowa prioritize road projects by identifying areas most vulnerable to 100-year floods.
Statewide Flood Resiliency
In 2021 the Iowa DOT Resiliency and Sustainability Committee started to develop a data-driven method to identify and assign a score to specific sections of interstates, U.S. and state highways that are most vulnerable to a 100-year flood event. That score allows Iowa’s decision-makers to prioritize construction projects geared to reinforce areas that may be more vulnerable to flood damage. Statewide Flood Resiliency Analysis
