We are sorry for your loss. The information below explains what to do with a driver’s license or ID when a loved one dies, and how to make sure their record is updated with the Iowa DOT.
Back to topUpdating the Driver Record
In most cases, the funeral home or the Iowa Department of Public Health will notify state agencies when a death is recorded. This usually updates the person’s driving record automatically.
If you would like to confirm that the record has been updated, you may contact the Iowa DOT’s Motor Vehicle Division. Having the following information available can be helpful:
- Full name of the deceased
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license or ID number (if available)
- Date of death
- Your contact information
You typically do not need to provide the physical license or ID for the record update.
Back to topWhat to Do with the License or ID Card
After someone passes away, their driver’s license or ID should no longer be used. You may:
- Destroy the card: Cut through the photo and barcode before disposing of it.
- Return it if asked: If an agency requests the card, please follow the instructions provided.
- Keep it temporarily: If you need the card for estate or legal matters, store it securely and destroy it once it is no longer needed.
Protecting Personal Information
A driver’s license or ID contains personal information. Destroying the card helps prevent misuse or identity theft.
- Do not share the card unless a government agency or legal representative requests it.
- Avoid sending photos or scans of the card electronically.
- Shred or securely discard any copies once they are no longer needed.
Donor, Veteran, or Other Indicators
If your loved one was listed as an organ, eye, or tissue donor, that information is stored electronically and is not affected by destroying the card.
Other indicators on the card—such as veteran designation or disability symbols—do not require any additional steps when a person passes.
Back to topIf You Need Proof of Their License or ID
For estate, insurance, or legal matters, you may need to show that your loved one had a driver’s license or ID. Options include:
- A photocopy or photo of the card.
- Requesting a certified driving record, if permitted under Iowa law.
- Providing another form of identification such as a passport.
Access to a driving record is limited by privacy laws. In most cases, only the executor, immediate family, or authorized legal representatives may request information.
