Iowa DOT uses geospatial technology in many ways, including mapping roads and analyzing land from a distance. Most of this data is stored in an Oracle Spatial database, which allows flexibility in developing mapping systems. Iowa DOT also uses software from different companies, such as Intergraph GeoMedia, ArcGIS Server, Quick Terrain Modeler, and Geocortex Essentials.
Iowa's Linear Referencing System (LRS) helps locate places on roads using different methods, like mile markers, and can convert between them. It also keeps detailed maps of over 114,000 miles of public roads.
