Two work groups make up the transportation safety section of the Traffic and Safety Bureau. These areas include:

Traffic Engineering
Two work groups (design and operations) make up the traffic engineering section. Functions of this area include:
Traffic Engineering Design Group
- Design of signs, traffic signals, and highway lighting
- Plan development/production
- Consultant coordination
- Review of consultant plans
- Shop drawings/submittals
- Construction coordination
Traffic Engineering Operations Group
- Warrants analysis for traffic signals and all-way stop control
- Speed studies
- District sign requests
- Statewide sign replacement projects
- Sign database
- Permitting of traffic control devices, automated traffic enforcement, and license plate readers
