Back to topProject Overview
U.S. 61 was first built in 1932 as an 18-foot-wide road. It was widened in 1955 and again in 1996. Over the years, different sections were resurfaced to keep the road in good condition. In 1988, the Iowa DOT’s Transportation Commission identified U.S. 61 in southeast Iowa as as part of the Commercial Industrial Network, and approved plans to expand it into a four-lane highway with a 65 mph speed limit.
As part of this corridor project the Iowa Department of Transportation will make the following improvements:
Phase 3: Mediapolis to Iowa 78
- Widening of U.S. 61 from two to four lanes.
- Diamond interchange at County Road H22.
Phase 4 Part 1: Iowa 78 to 100th Street, includes Wapello Bypass
- Widening of U.S. 61 from two to four lanes.
- Diamond interchanges at 65th Street and County Road G62.
- Re-alignment of 100th Street to connect with County Road G62 and the new interchange.
- New bridges over Honey Creek and Otter Creek.
Phase 4 Part 2: 100th Street to Iowa 92
- Widening of U.S. 61 from two to four lanes.
- New bridges over Mill Race Creek, Iowa River, and Muskrat Lake.
