CORNING, Iowa – August 12, 2025 – At its meeting in Corning today, the Iowa Transportation Commission approved just over $1.4 million in funding to support four public transit facility projects. The projects are funded under the state Public Transit Infrastructure Grant Program for new or improved facilities to support public transit services.
A transit system can apply to have up to 80 percent of their project funded through this program. To qualify, a transit system must secure local matching funds for a minimum of 20 percent of the project costs.
Four projects were approved by the Commission:
- Maintenance Facility Expansion and Modernization (University of Iowa, Cambus) $566,096
- In-Ground Hoist Replacement (Ames Transit Agency, CyRide) $566,096
- Revolving Door Replacement (Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority) $120,000
- Passenger Elevator Replacement (Sioux City Transit) $163,048
“The DOT received $1.56 Million in funding requests from four public transit agencies this year. The Public Transit Infrastructure Grant Program is an important source of funding for the construction and maintenance of public transit facilities in which buses are stored and maintained, passengers connect to their next route, and trips are dispatched,” said Kristin Haar, Public Transit Director at the Iowa Department of Transportation.
Public transit service is available in all 99 counties. Thirty-five transit systems combined to provide over 19 million rides last year, getting the public where they need to go. Visit https://iowadot.gov/modes-travel/transit for more information on Iowa’s public transit systems.
