GRIMES, Iowa – March 19, 2026 – If you drive on Interstate 35/I-80 through the Hickman Road interchange construction project, you need to be aware of overnight road closures that may slow down your trip, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Grimes Construction office.
Construction crews will be demolishing bridges over the U.S. 6/Hickman Road interchange. Work will be taking place between the on- and off-ramp terminals. The following closures are planned to implement the new traffic shift:
- Both Northbound and Southbound lanes of I-35/I-80 will be closed to traffic Sunday March 22 through Thursday, March 26 from 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Single-lane closures only on mainline I-80.
- Hickman Road will be closed to traffic between ramp terminals.
- The ramps at U.S. 6/Hickman Road will remain open to traffic during the roadway closures.
- The closure detour route is Northwest 128th Street to University Avenue to Northwest 114th Street.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
