AMES, Iowa – June 12, 2025 – The Iowa DOT is proposing to replace the pavement on U.S. 6 (W. Marengo Road) in Tiffin. An additional lane will be added to provide a center left turn lane. Right turn lanes will be included at Kimberlite Drive (westbound and eastbound) and at Croell Avenue (westbound only).

Sidewalks are proposed through the entire limits of the project. This project will require right-of-way acquisition:

  • Approximately 0.13 acre of Jim Bartels Tiffin City Park
  • Approximately 0.03 acre from the Mayor Glenn Potter Park

The land will be used to add revetment (a protective structure, usually made of rock or concrete) at the ends of the culvert extensions to prevent erosion. These portions of the parks will be permanently incorporated into the transportation system.

Both the Jim Bartels Tiffin City Park and Mayor Glenn Potter Park are publicly owned and operated by the City of Tiffin. These properties have been determined to be Section 4(f) resources and the project is expected to have de minimis impact on the areas. Section 4(f) of the U.S. Department of Transportation Act of 1966 was enacted as a means of protecting publicly owned parks, recreation areas, and wildlife/waterfowl refuges, as well as historic sites of local, state, or national significance from conversion to transportation uses. De minimis impacts are defined as those that, after consideration of any measure(s) to minimize harm (such as avoidance, minimization, mitigation, or enhancement measures), do not adversely affect the activities, features, and attributes of the Section 4(f) resource.
