CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – May 29, 2026 – Drivers on Interstate 380 through Cedar Rapids and Linn County should expect slow-moving maintenance vehicles on the road beginning this weekend, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT) District 6 Office.
Work will take place nightly between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Sunday, May 31 and Monday, June 1, weather permitting.
Workers will use a crash attenuator during the project. The attenuator is a trailer towed behind a DOT truck that acts as a moving buffer between traffic and workers. It has flashing lights and reflective panels to help drivers see it.
If a vehicle approaches the attenuator too fast or too close, the operator will sound a loud warning alarm to alert the driver. The Iowa DOT will use attenuators at night. The alarm is not constant — it sounds only when needed to prevent a crash. Nearby residents may hear it.
Drivers in the work zone should:
- Slow down and obey posted speed limits
- Stay alert and keep space between vehicles
- Wear seat belts
Traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones.
