Here’s one for those of you who like science. Newton’s First Law of Motion states that a body at rest will remain at rest, and a body in motion will remain in motion unless it is acted upon by an external force. The body we’re talking about is yours when you’re in a vehicle. The external force is your seat belt.
Did you know that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says nearly 50 percent of people killed in crashes in the United States in 2021 weren’t wearing seat belts, and in Iowa, that number is closer to 60 percent?
While wearing a seat belt is second nature to many of us, one misconception is that you don’t need to wear a seat belt if your vehicle has airbags. The truth is that airbags are designed to work WITH seat belts, not replace them. Without a seat belt, you could crash into the vehicle’s interior or other passengers, or be ejected completely from the vehicle.
Relying on airbags is just one reason some people don’t buckle up. If you need to find a reason to click that buckle just look around at the people who care for you. What would they do if you didn’t make it home following a crash? Click it, don’t risk it.
