Feb. 1, 2024 – The Decatur Bridge located in Burt County is a historic landmark providing regional connectivity for more than 70 years. Ongoing maintenance of the aging bridge indicates it is time to determine the appropriate long-term solution to provide continued access across the Missouri River.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation and Iowa Department of Transportation are seeking community input to help inform a Decatur Bridge Feasibility Study evaluating options to improve the Missouri River crossing.

Help shape the future of the Decatur Bridge – a community survey is available now through March 15, 2024, and the project team wants to hear from you!

To participate, visit the project website at ndot.info/32395. Once on the website, there are two ways to engage and provide input:

  1. Take a simple, short survey to share how frequently you use the Decatur Bridge, any issues you may have, and how important it is for regional connectivity.
  2. Map issues and opportunities by dropping pins onto an interactive map - select a pin, drag it onto the map, add a comment, and repeat.

In addition to the online version, hard-copy surveys are available for pick up and drop off at the following locations before March 15:

  • Decatur City Hall, 913 S. Broadway, Decatur, NE 68020
  • Decatur Senior Center, 425 8th St., Decatur, NE 68020
  • Onawa City Hall, 914 Diamond St., Onawa, IA 51040
  • Onawa Community Center, 320 10th St., Onawa, IA 51040
  • Onawa Public Library/Chamber of Commerce, 707 Iowa Ave., Onawa, IA 51040

Identified as the Decatur Bridge, the proposed project would evaluate options to improve the Nebraska Highway 51 (N-51) / Iowa Highway 175 (IA-175) Missouri River crossing in Burt County, Neb., and Monona County, Iowa. The Decatur Bridge project planning and design would occur over three phases and multiple years. Construction will depend on available funding but could begin as early as 2029. Additional timeline details and a project email sign-up form are available on the project website: ndot.info/32395.
