Ames, Iowa – July 5, 2024 – Utility work to replace power poles damaged during a tornado this spring will require closures of the northbound Interstate 35 rest area near Elkhart next week.

On Monday and Tuesday, July 8 and July 9, the northbound I-35 rest area will be closed from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. each day to move utility equipment around the rest area. On Wednesday, July 10, the rest area will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to string new electric lines between the newly installed utility poles.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
