Jefferson, Iowa – July 30, 2024 – If you travel on 580th Avenue between Ames and Nevada you need to be aware of an upcoming construction project that could slow down your trip.

Crews need to close 580th Avenue/Story County Road R-70 south of U.S. 30 at 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, weather permitting, so connections between the old and new roadway can be made. While the roadway is closed you will follow a marked detour route using Story County Road R-70, Iowa 210, Interstate 35, and U.S. 30 (see map).

Beginning at 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 12, crews will close 580th Avenue/Teller Avenue north of U.S. 30 to connect the old and new portions of the roadway. You will follow a marked detour route using 580th Avenue, Lincoln Highway, and 600th Street (see map).

Both portions of 580th Avenue and the new interchange are expected to open on Friday, Oct. 18.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
