AMES, Iowa – December 13, 2025, 2:40 P.M. – The Iowa Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Iowa State Patrol, has closed all lanes of Interstate 80 from I-380 at Coralville to Walcott, west of Davenport. The closure is to allow Iowa State Patrol and first responders to safely access multiple crashes due to road conditions.
Barriers have been activated. In addition to restricting travel on the mainline interstate roadway, all entrance ramps to I-80 at each of the intersecting roadways will be closed.
The Iowa DOT recommends that travelers who are near the Iowa City/Coralville metro area seek shelter rather than continuing their route. More traveler services and truck parking is available in the Iowa City/Coralville area.
If travel is not essential in this area, delay your trip.
Travelers already within the closed section will be allowed to exit. If vehicles are stranded, emergency crews will attempt to assist travelers to safety. However, due to conditions, emergency response could be impossible or significantly delayed.
Travelers who have sought shelter in any available rest area facilities will be allowed to remain there unless directed by Iowa DOT or law enforcement personnel to relocate to another designated safe location.
The decision to close an interstate roadway means a serious safety condition exists, and rescue crews may be in the area. Persons should never attempt to enter a closed roadway or go around barricades or gates.
The Iowa DOT will issue a notification when the roadway will be safely reopened.
