DECORAH, Iowa – March 27, 2026 – If you travel on Iowa 9 from U.S. 52 to near Pleasant Avenue in Decorah you need to be aware of an upcoming construction project that may slow down your trip according to according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s New Hampton construction office.

Beginning on Monday, April 6, weather permitting, lane closures will be in place for the initial phase of a reconstruction project that includes adding temporary pavement. This phase of the project is expected to be completed by late April.

Once the first phase is completed, you will travel in a head-to-head traffic pattern in the westbound lanes of Iowa 9 so crews can reconstruct the eastbound lanes. Once completed, you will be shifted to the new eastbound lanes so the westbound lanes can be reconstructed.

Access to side streets from Iowa 9 will be right-in and right-out. When there is a staged side-road closure you will follow a marked detour route. Access to residences and businesses will be maintained during this project that is expected to be completed by late November.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
