GRIMES, Iowa – April 20, 2026 – If you drive on Interstate 80 between the Northeast Mixmaster and U.S. 65 you need to be aware of an overnight road closure that may slow down your trip, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Grimes Construction office.
Our construction crew needs to close the westbound I-80 to northbound I-35 ramp overnight April 21-24. The work will begin at 10 p.m. each night and the ramp will open back up to traffic by 5 a.m. each morning.
When the ramp is closed, you will follow a marked detour route that uses westbound I-80 to U.S. 69, then eastbound I-80 to northbound I-35. The detour route is shown on the map below.
Visit the Iowa DOT website at https://iowadot.gov/modes-travel/roads-highways/major-construction-projects/des-moines-area-interstate-projects/northeast-mixmaster-construction for additional information about construction on I-80 between the northeast mixmaster and U.S. 65.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
