WATERLOO, Iowa – April 28, 2026 – If you travel on northbound U.S. 218 to reach southbound Iowa 58 near Waterloo you need to be aware of an upcoming construction project that may slow down your trip, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s New Hampton construction office.

Beginning on Monday, May 4, until late July, weather permitting, crews will close the northbound exit ramp to southbound Iowa 58, 0.1 miles north of Iowa 57 in Waterloo, so they can work on a bridge deck overlay project.

The exit ramp to southbound Iowa 58 will be closed for the duration of the project. You will follow a marked detour route using U.S. 218 and the Lone Tree Road interchange to travel around the work zone and reach Iowa 58.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
